Srila Prabhupada has said that even a little service to God is taken as great service. Krishna is so kind. So we should try always to give the best service, best energy, and we become liberated.
We have to be intelligent enough to know that we should do no more service to these material objectives. And our only goal should be to use our senses in the service of the Lord. That is the perfection of life.
In the material world, if you give service you become tired. But in the transcendental world, if you give service, you become more enthusiastic. In the material world, as soon as you stop payment there is no service. But by serving Krishna, we get transcendental pleasure. So the more we engage ourselves in the service of the Lord, the more we become enthusiastic.
In the material world whatever service we render is spoiling time. But if we render service to Krishna, Krishna will be satisfied, and when Krishna is satisfied, everyone will be satisfied. That is perfection. So we have to engage all our service in the service of Krishna. It is very pleasing, encouraging, and enlightening.
Having understood the importance of devotional service, we have to know the ways by which one can discharge devotional service. Srila Rupa Goswami, in Nectar of Devotion (Chapter 6) gives us the following instructions on how to discharge devotional service actively in the temple.
- One should render some voluntary service.
- One should offer service to Vaisnavas (devotees).
- One should arrange one's devotional service according to one's means.
- During important occasions like Karttika, Janmastami, etc one should observe a special service.
